Showing up in July for First Friday will be a "Star-Studded Evening of Jazz". Gabe Baltazar will be here with his Saxophone, The Chuck James Trio, Wally Amos, Al Harrington, and Rea Fox will all be playing, as well as talking about their craft. If you want to hear some good music, and you want to learn about the roots of jazz and blues, please join us on July 6, 2012 between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM. A special thank you to the Hawai‘i Friends of Civil Rights for organizing our evening of jazz.

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Hawai‘i State Art Museum would like to thank the Hawai‘i Youth Symphony, and their alumni for performing here in July for First Friday. It was amazing! The music throughout the galleries and building was simply beautiful. If you like Brass and Strings, keep your eyes and ears open because the Hawai‘i Youth Symphony will be back!

August First Friday will bring back an old friend in Dayton Watanabe. Dayton will be bringing his guitar and treating us to more slack key and other selections from his broad repertoire. We all really enjoyed the last time he was here. You should come by and check it out too!

There are features on Lynne Yoshiko Nakasone receiving the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship, the "First Friday" event entitled "Star-Studded Evening of Jazz" on Friday, July 6th; the "Second Saturday" event entitled "Get Crazy! with the Hawai‘i Quilt Guild" on Saturday, July 14th; and the "Art Lunch" lecture presented by Christopher Greywolf on Tuesday, July 31st.

New Exhibits - Friday night in the back of the Diamond Head Gallery is BODY OF WORK: INTERPRETATIONSOF THE HUMAN FORM. This exhibition from the Art in Public Places collection, focuses on the human figure, primarily the nude, through portraiture, figure studies, and symbolic representations.

ABOUT THE HAWAII STATE MUSEUM

The Hawai'i State Art Museum is located in No. 1 Capitol Distric Building at 250 South Hotel Street. The building is situated in the historic Hawaii Capital Cultural District, across from 'Iolani Palace and the State Capitol.
