The Mendonca Building's unique Courtyard is open again for First Friday and will be also be offering a peek into the 10 new artist studio Lofts that have been added upstairs.  HAPA is still accepting applications for tenancy.

Jimson Carr was born on Oahu, and has traveled throughout the Hawaiian Islands and South Pacific.  His current focus is capturing the unique flora, fauna, and landscapes of the islands.  He'll be presenting a variety of cards, gifts, and limited edition wall-art pieces, including work from his phenomenal Pele at Work: Lava at Kalapana series.  You can also find his images at Kuloko Fine Arts of Hawaii or on the web at www.badcatphotography.com"

Sarah White is new to the Courtyard and has been painting with the Creative Arts Program at the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific since 2005.  Sarah was born and grew up in Honolulu and attended Williams College in Massachusetts.  She was working at the Harvard Eating Disorders Center at Massachusetts General Hospital when she suffered a stroke in 2003 at the age of 25.  After her release from the hospital in Boston, she returned home to Honolulu to continue her recovery.   Although she began painting before her stroke, she has had to relearn techniques since she is now using her non-dominant left hand.   Sarah was a competitive swimmer in high school and college and a number of her works are focused on the ocean and swimming.  More recently she has been focusing on people, and interesting faces.

Wilbert “Bert” Wong Jr. returns to the Courtyard with his beautiful Monstera leaves.  He started his welding career in August of 2003 at Honolulu Community College, and received his Associates in Welding Technology.  He work ed for the Iron Workers Union for the following 3 years, becoming inspired by other metal artist and television shows on HGTV, SPIKE and National Geographic.  Bert decided to pursue his love for the arts. Since childhood, Bert was always intrigued with the Monstera leaves that grew up in his mother’s garden. The natural holes in the leaves illustrates a unique quality, while the way they grow so closely together, demonstrates the bond of Hawaii’s people to their O`hana.  The pieces that you see created are all designed from individual leaves traced onto aluminum; hand cut, filed, welded, and painted with copper.  Finally, the leaves are treated with special paints and acids for the patina effect.  They may be used as art for indoor wall hangings, sconces, and outdoor dОcor; to enhance a front gate or the outside of a home.  Custom designs are available upon request.

Jules Schaper will be returning to the courtyard and will be showing her unique and very colorful batik like paintings on rice paper, mostly with a Hawaiian theme.  Additional work of hers can be seen on Printscapes.com.

Alida Farlaino is also back in the Courtyard.  She is a Hawaii born, but world traveled, photographer and artist who owns and operates her own small photography business called Farlaino Foto out of Kailua.  Her photography style is simple: showing ordinary things, in extraordinary ways.  She likes to shoot what she actually saw, as she saw it and believes that her view of the world is just different enough to keep her photography interesting.

TAG (The Actor’s Group from the theater upstairs) will be back with a collection from Dusty Flint “on the Rack”.  Come by and try on something wonderful.

Otis Schaper, husband, father, surfer, singer/songwriter has been living in Hawaii since 1987. While managing surfboard production at The Factory in Wahiawa and raising ten year-old Kawehi with his wife Jules, Schaper still finds time to write songs and perform occasionally. Otis recorded a classic rock flavored CD titled “Meet The Strangers” with his band of 12 years, The Strangers, in 2008. He is currently finishing his debut solo record and writing songs for a children’s record inspired by Kawehi.

Kate Wagner will be providing her Box dinners from the Starpoint CafО.  She always has some interesting pieces of art inside to view while you eat.   Some of the artwork is her own originals and some are contributed by her friends.

Enter into the Chinatown Courtyard on Smith Street through the stand of bamboo at the Blue Dragon Gate or from the Maunakea Street doors.  This event is free and open to the public.
