We are honored to show the work of Hanna Polak in April. She is an award-winning director, producer, cinematographer, and photographer. Born in Poland, she studied acting and theatre at the Acting School in Wroclav and Warsaw. In 2002, she was awarded Best Producer of Documentary and Short Fiction Movies at the International Film Festival in Krakow, Poland for Railway Station Ballad. In 2004, she completed work on The Children of Leningradsky in collaboration with HBO. The Children of Leningradsky received many awards internationally, including an Oscar nomination, an International Documentary Association Award for Best Documentary, two Emmy nominations, and the Gracie Allen Award, given by Women in Radio and Television. At the request of UNICEF, she recently wrote an article on the subject of child homelessness for UNICEF’s publication covering the twentieth anniversary of the Declaration of the Right of the Child. Her photography has been greatly instrumental in helping the children of Russia. She has been involved with the charitable organization Active Child Aid in Moscow. The mission of Active Child Aid is to help homeless children believe in themselves, their future, and regain the human dignity.

Lynne Boyer returns and says: «Sometimes I really like to show all the details in a scene. Other times I choose to leave out certain details and let the brush strokes, application of the paint and values do all the work. I feel that when I look at a painting, saying more with less, usually creates a much stronger painting. It's an endless learning process, so I am never bored!» She paints natural scenes with oil on canvas. She was born with a keen interest in visual arts and started drawing and painting at an early age. Lynne grew up on Oahu and became a World Champion surfer winning the titles in 1978 & 1979, even though her interest in the arts never waned. Although a primarily self-taught artist, she has taken a number of university art courses and participated in various workshops lead by established artists. Her experience and talent in fine art, as well as her familiarity with the ocean and her love of nature, give her paintings a unique perspective that reflects the beauty and power of our ever-changing world.

TAG will be represented downstairs again: The Dustyflint Collection will be back in the courtyard with fabulous vintage clothing to feed your Spring Fever. Wonderful Hawaiiana, Spring formals and, of course, just plain weird outfits. Try on an Easter bonnet or take your purchase home in a basket purse!

Shana Squier lives in Hawaii and began painting and drawing at a young age. She started painting seriously in the past eight years. She paints abstracts, portraits and murals. Her influence comes from the beautiful scenery Hawaii has to offer. Using her current emotions, Shana strives to create an organic and fluid composition in her abstract art.

Shana experiments with different media-paints, boards and textures from beach glass, broken mirrors and found objects. She enjoys the physical and spiritual act of painting and often uses the floor as her easel, throwing paint and manipulating the wet textures as she tips the board in numerous directions. This month Shana is pleased to include various sized giclee prints of her paintings, original oil paintings, and new this year, home made tie-dye bandanas and sarongs made with 100% cotton fabric.

Alida Farlaino is another newcomer to the Courtyard. She is a Hawaii born, but world traveled, photographer and artist who owns and operates her own small photography business called Farlaino Foto out of Kailua. Her photography style is simple: showing ordinary things, in extraordinary ways. She likes to shoot what she actually saw, as she saw it and believes that her view of the world is just different enough to keep her photography interesting.

Fred Gayagas will be back on the platform ready to welcome people into the Courtyard with his blend of local and old favorites on his guitar.

Kate Wagner will be providing her Box dinners from the Starpoint Café. She always has some interesting pieces of art inside to view while you eat. Some of the artwork is her own originals and some are contributed by her friends.
Enter into the Chinatown Courtyard on Smith Street through the stand of bamboo at the Blue Dragon Gate or from the Maunakea Street doors. This event is free and open to the public.
