Black Cat Tattoo Studio and Art Gallery of Chinatown, Honolulu will present THE AWAKENING the first collaboration of internationally recognized artists Andy King and Basil Sakamoto. Though the well-known duel practices in different media – oil painting and graphic design, respectively -- their visions reflect a shared theme of cultural awareness and representation. In THE AWAKENING, Andy exhibits amazingly intricate multi-layered pieces, and Basil presents vivid graphic designs of complex nature and human themed art.

The collaborative exhibition examines beauty, wisdom and courage along side humor and simplicity. THE AWAKENING plays on the intersection between reality and the amusing side of life.

Andy King aka Fronz Moook aka ShiroKage has distinguished himself as one of the important painters of his generation. Beginning with the “hippos have wings” movement, his work effectively blurred the boundaries between high art and popular traditions. His recent works retain an overall sensual scheme, not afraid to throw in a booby or camel toe. These fragments are, in turn, layered into mutations that explore the effects of a deviate mind. Each of Andy’s pieces is witty, packed with thoughtful allusions, and highly visually engaging.

Basil Sakamoto aka Beelzebub aka Jumbo KaraKuchi is perhaps as well known as a distinguished surfer, and quilt maker, as he is as an Artist. THE AWAKENING features his color graphic designs that celebrate the rich diversity of urban life, nature and beautiful women. Beneath their aesthetic framework, however, these images are intensely political inasmuch as they link Basil’s intellectual and emotional commitment to social change.

This “First Friday” celebration is a fundraising event for Kenneth Brimer in support of his recent diagnosis of Chronic Lymphotic Leukemia.

For the entire month of November- Black Cat Studio will be offering “tattoo for Kenny”. Proceeds will help with medical expenses and traveling to the mainland for procedures .When booking a tattoo appointment please mention you are supporting Kenny.
