Visual
ART
FEATURE ARTISTS: Matt Mallams and Elyse
Butler are photographers currently based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Matt has a passion
for exploring the streets, working in response to what is given to him, and
creating compositions mixing light, color, subjects, reflections, and
interactions between people and their environments. Elyse has a fervor and focus
on documenting social issues and creating story-telling visual art; she makes
pictures to better understand her life as she's living it.
Their
clients and publications include Aurora Photos, Contour by Getty, the New York
Times, the FADER, Discover, Revolver, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many
more. Recently they exhibited their work at the San Francisco Exposure
Gallery, and the Visions Gallery in Ventura, California. They are both graduates
from the Brooks Institute of Photography and are founding members of the Aevum
photo collective.
Paul Lipman slid into this reality on September 24, 1975. He has been sliding on his ass ever since. Following a not so glamorous academic stint, (ending with his illustrious college drop out) he decided his best move would be to live in a tent for three years while doing renaissance fairs. After this exercise in non-reality, he moved on to Denver, Colorado (his home for the last six years). During his tenure there, he discovered the Slam. He has yet to shut up.
The Cave Canem Fellow is the Editor of His Rib: Stories, Poems & Essays by HER & Barbershop Chronicles, and authored three books including Destroy, Rebuild & Other Reconstructions. Mahogany has released four LPs including the international hit Black Secret Soul and the newest live album Sheroshima. As co-founder of the Off Broadway poetry production, Jam On It, and co-producer of NYC’s 1st Performance Poetry Festival: SoundBites Poetry Festival, Mahogany bridges the gap between lyrical poets and literary emcee. Her freelance journalism can be found in magazines KING, XXL, The Source, Canada's The Word and UK's MOBO. She also facilitates performance poetry and writing workshops throughout the country, focusing on women empowerment and youth mentoring. She is the owner of PoetCD.Com, an on-line marketing and distribution company for poets and is the host and curator at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe
MUSIC:
HABER DASHERY Formed on the north shore of Oahu and refined on the streets of Waikiki, Haberdashery is an act unlike anything you have ever seen. A relatively new band, who dedicate all of their performances to their late friend James Don Warren III, their line up includes anywhere between 8 to 11 members who play instruments as odd and unique as the people who play them. Their sound contains influences from all over the world but could be best described as avant garde dirty gypsy anti-folk rock. They are a treat for both the eyes and the ears.
FREE SOUND Imagine a band of brothers that harness the mystic energies of the universe, then delivers them unto you through sound. That is FreeSound. Remember great music......Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Sublime.... bands that change the way you see music and the world...That is what FreeSound does and they are doing it NOW.
SPECIAL GUEST HOST Tui-Z is Your Friendly Neighborhood Samoan. Born and raised in the arms of Hawaii, poetry was no stranger to his ancestors. Host of Hawaii's only weekly poetry show, mentor and coach to the 2008 and 2009 YouthSpeaks Hawaii Champions at the International Brave New Voices festival, his committment to enhancing the growth of art in the islands is one of a kind.
