The Mendonca Building's Courtyard is open again for a First Friday celebration! Because construction has just begun on the second floor for the artist studios, space is limited by construction materials, only four artists will be on exhibit.
Sonya Napoleon, new to the Courtyard, was born and raised in Australia. She moved to Hawaii in 2008 with her husband and two children to be closerÊto her husband's family. She studied art and graphics in high school in Melbourne, and although not formally trained, she managed to produce her own range of greeting cards which she supplied to gift shops in 2004. She was the illustrator for a children's book called 'Cafe La Jungool' which was published in 2005. Sonya is currently pursuing painting whilst raising her two children and hop es to build up a collection withÊunderwater themes being the focus of her work. John Johnson is a freedive photographer whose international award-winning works have appeared in the Smithsonian Institute and the Natural History Museum of London. He has been featured on KHNL and KGMB and his images have been published in a variety of local publications, including Hawaii Skin Diver, Star Bulletin, and the Honolulu Advertiser. ÊSee his website at www.OneBreathPhotography.com and join him in the amazing world under the waterline. Or just come to Chinatown to see a sample of his amazing imagesall captured on a single breath of air underwater.
Wilbert Bert Wong Jr., also new to the Courtyard, will be showing his Monstera leaves. He started his welding career in 2003 at Honolulu Community College, receiving his Associates in Welding Technology. ÊHe went on to work for the Iron Workers Union for the following 3 years. Eventually, inspired by other metal artist and television shows on HGTV, SPIKE and National Geographic, Bert decided to pursue his love for the arts.
Since childhood, Bert was always intrigued with the Monstera leaves that grew in his mothers garden. The natural holes in the leaves illustrates a unique quality, while the way they grow so close together to each other, blending together, demonstrates the bond of Hawaiis people to their O`hana. ÊThe pieces on exhibit were created from individual leaves traced onto aluminum; hand cut, filed, welded, and painted with copper. Finally, the leaves are treated with special paints and acids for the patina effect. They may be used as art for indoor wall hangings, sconces, and outdoor décor; to enhance a front gate or the outside of a home. Custom designs are available upon request. Along with her Box dinners from Starpoint Cafe, ÊKate Wagner will be showing her one-of-a-kind exotic shoes. Ask her for the story behind each shoe.
Fred Gayagas will be on stage with his familiar music and audience interaction. He welcomes your participation with music or hula.
