A LESSON BEFORE DYING
By Romulus Linney
Based On The Novel By Ernest J. Gaines
Directed & Produced By Laurie Tanoura
This wrenching story is an elegant but harsh illumination of the search for grace and dignity. Set in backwoods Louisiana in 1948, Jefferson, an innocent young black man, awaits execution for the death of a white man. His elderly godmother asks a plantation school teacher, who questions his own self-worth, to confront the willful convict in the hope of helping him to die like a man. However, it is the lessons the teacher learns from the condemned man that succeed in exposing purpose in his own life. A moving, engrossing, and finally devastating adaptation for the stage.
From Ernest J. Gaines' 1992 book of the same name which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize; received the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction; and was the October 1997 choice of Oprah's Book Club.
