The Mendonca Building's Courtyard will be hosting a group of artists from the Big Island for the March One Night Stand. Some of them exhibit in Oahu galleries but some have not shown their work here before.

You may have seen Stephanie Bolton's wonderful Coffee posters in Kona or other places. Stephanie was raised on the rural Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. She is a third generation artist, having artist-grandmothers in both her maternal and paternal sides of the family. She graduated high school from Makua Lani Christian School in 1999 at the age of 16 and moved to Santa Barbara, California to attend college at Westmont College in Montecito. She also studied figure painting in Orvieto, Italy eventually receiving her BA in Fine Art. In 2002 she returned to Kona to raise her three sons in the islands. She has worked on logo design, illustration, and embroidery design but predominantly specializes in portraits and custom original paintings.

John McCollum is a newcomer tothe Courtyard, but has shown his work in an earlier "First Friday" event. John was born in North Carolina, grew up in Georgia, and has lived on the Big Island of Hawaii since 1981. His pyrographic designs express his love for the island, it's people and culture. Gourds, bamboo and native hardwoods are his canvas of choice. He has recently expanded his designs by using color, carving and weaving. He uses his designs to teach and tell the stories of the meaning of different flowers, or tools, or things of cultural significance. Outside of First Friday he can be found in several Oahu galleries. John is a member of the Hawaii Gourd Society and the American Gourd Society.

Dania Zempel is an artist from Volcano Village who grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii. She was featured in the Courtyard in November 2008. She creates amazing works of art on eggshells of all kinds -- Chicken, Goose, Rhea, Emu, and others. She has been carving eggs since January of 2005 and is the recipient of the Waimea Arts Council New Artist Award -- summer of 2005, as well as having 6 International Awards in Egg Carving. She was also commissioned by the American Egg Board to design the 2008 Hawaii State Egg for the Easter Egg Display at the White House. A traveling copy of the State Egg will be on display, along with other lacy, filigree creations and surface-etched designs. Denise Mollison appeared on TV recently telling how her home business of creating and selling dolls came to a halt due to government regulations. Not to be thwarted, she began a new business of miniature purses, which she will be displaying for sale.
