Live from the Lawn – Poetry, Opera, and Jazz

Join us for Poetry, Opera, and Jazz, a special Live from the Lawn event at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum on First Friday on February 6th from 6 to 9 p.m. This event features poets, opera singers, and blues and jazz musicians.

The lawn program begins with singers from Hawai‘i Opera Theatre (HOT) who will perform selections from their upcoming spring program Abduction from the Seraglio. Soon to celebrate 50 years, HOT is Hawai‘i’s only professional opera company.

Malia in Hawai‘i will belly dance with the Hawai‘i Opera Theater’s Abduction from the Seraglio.

Up next are poets from Youth Speaks Hawai‘i, the local chapter of the nation’s leading nonprofit presenter of spoken word performance, education, and youth development programs. These poets pick up the pen and take hold of the microphone as creators of social, artistic, educational, and political change.

Then it’s time for the blues with Friends of Adam featuring Clay Campania on vocals and guitars, Ernie Ecraela on bass, and Justin Inocelda on drums. This trio brings a new and fresh sound to the blues.

Bamboo Ridge Press presents poets Joe Tsujimoto and Mavis Hara. The press was founded in 1978 to publish literature by and about Hawai‘i’s people. Tsujimoto will read his stories on the life of a Japanese American raised in Harlem after his family moved to New York following internment during World War II.

Slam poet Kealoha will perform spoken word with musical help from his friends. Kealoha founded Hawai‘iSlam, a non-profit organization which showcases local poets at the First Thursdays slam poetry competition.

Upstairs on the Lanai Lounge, there’s music by Bop Tribal, featuring Satomi Yarimizo on piano, DeShannon Higa on trumpet, Reggie Padilla on tenor sax, Abe Lagrimas Jr. on drums, and Shawn Conley on bass. They will play new music from their debut album entitled Bop Tribal.

Bop Tribal, a jazz quintet, features Satomi Yarimizo on piano, DeShannon Higa on trumpet, Reggie Padilla on tenor sax, Abe Lagrimas Jr. on drums, and Shawn Conley on bass.

Slam poet Kealoha, founder of Hawai‘iSlam, will perform at HiSAM.

Then there’s a performance by poets from Tinfish Press. This non-profit organization publishes a journal of experimental poetry from the Pacific, including Hawai‘i, New Zealand, Aotearoa, Australia, California, and western Canada. After the poetry, there’s an encore performance by Bop Tribal.

This free event is presented by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum. The event is produced by Tim Bostock Productions.
