WOOO, oh my..yes! Elegant strangeness rings the December rains to drench us in a multitude of beauteous provocations. The lady with the brush of innovation is Erin Mcullough, her work branches into new surfaces, and a story of painful renewal. SHe brings Beach-boy EMerging Artist Aaron Char into the light, along with jewel wizard Janice Giles. The sonorous sensations are a multitude starting with surf-psycadelia from The Brohemians, and then the one and onLy Taimane Gardner with the quintessential Quadraphonix, last up on the music biLL is Terra NOva, a multi-linguistic latin funk band we will dance our butts off with. SLam Poet Ainsley Burrows arrives from Brooklyn. African fusion dance is represented by Gabriela. Capoiera de Ouro jams the Brazilian kung fu. Then the goat god Pan gets ritualistic with his nymphs. yes, art becomes a culture of abunDanCe....

Visual ART
FEAUTURE ARTIST: ERIN MCULLOUGH. This shrew is a product of random acts of inspiration tempered by circumstance. Erin is hanging her third show at onG kinG, and this one is a very different.

First many of the pieces are not paintings on canvas, but rather utilitarian works done on jewelry boxes.

“The idea of taking paintings off the wall into the realm of object has been bouncing around in my head for some time. First I experimented with stackable blocks and tables. Then I was handed a jewelry box by a friend and became intrigued by the idea of utilitarian paintings.”

I asked Erin about several of her jewelry boxes which have drawers that can not be opened.

“I feel a philosophical battle regarding the nature of craft making, versus fine art. The jewelry boxes that only mimic usefulness are my attempt at acknowledging those that might argue my object pieces don't constitute art.”

In the creation of this show Erin faced a new obstacle. She hurt her right arm surfing and was unable to use it to paint. The obstacle quickly became an opportunity and she started to craft objects in new ways.

“I looked to my fastly deteriorating easel with longing to complete my paintings and was struck by its beauty.”

The easel became a dream like sign post, awash in colors and tiny mirrors.

“It now joins my pieces and offers viewers a glimpse of what artists will do to remain productive when faced with a challenging situation.”

EMERGING ARTIST: Aaron Char has a signature style, full of life and replete with images of beach life. Aaron is the son of two artists, born and raised in Hawaii, it was fated that surf and art would become his passions.

“Being a Waikiki Beach-boy I am on the beach living the dream. The images I create are reflections of my life, the people and places that fill it.”

One look at Aarons pieces will make many a mainlander jealous. His drawings maintain an accessible, comic style with long lines and curves depicting the outlines of experience. The colors and faces of the big waves, and good friends, are up to the viewer to create.

“welcome to my beach-boy life.”

Janice Giles loves jewelry. Her diverse world collection led her to discover the beauty she could create. These jewelry creations include precious stones, sterling silver and gold. For this collaboration with Erin Mcullough she has created unique pieces that exemplify the beauty of humanity.

MUSIC: THE BROHEMIANS are the psycadelic surf dub vision of Ryan Nadoonek and Joshua Dawson. THis is a power trio of spontaneous fusion mixing surf, dub, jazz, and punk, rock. “the music is coming from our souls, it's got groove, drive, energy, and, well...soul.”
This collaboration of fate is inspired by the ocean and surfing on mushrooms.
