For four hours each month, well-known and emerging artists are showcased within the historic, red brick promenade and in the festive Chinatown Courtyard. The December One Night Stand features engraved eggery, mixed media art pieces, a book signing, jewelry, unique Lanikai jellies and jams and refreshment for body and soul. Items appropriate for Christmas giving or additions to your collections will be for sale.

New to the Courtyard, Dania Zempel is an artist from Volcano Village who grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii. She creates amazing works of art on eggshells of all kinds -- Chicken, Goose, Rhea, Emu, and others. She has been carving eggs since January of 2005 and is the recipient of the Waimea Arts Council New Artist Award -- Summer of 2005, as well as having 6 International Awards in Egg Carving. She was also commissioned by the American Egg Board to design the 2008 Hawaii State Egg for the Easter Egg Display at the White House. A traveling copy of the State Egg will be on display, along with other lacy, filigree creations and surface-etched designs. Since she was not able to bring her entire stock, you can visit her web site at www.HawaiianParadiseDesigns.com

Also new to the Courtyard, is Regina Bode who studied both music and fine arts in Hamburg, Germany and Vienna, Austria. After she received her MA in music and fine arts from the Academy of Arts and the University of Hamburg, she worked as an art and music teacher and a freelance artist in Europe. Since 2004, she has been in Hawai'i working as an art instructor at the Honolulu Academy of Arts as well as a docent for Bishop Museum and the Hawai'i State Art Museum. Regina has participated in several juried art shows in Hawai'i, including the 2006 Artist of Hawai'i exhibition at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Her working fields are painting, drawing, mixed media and Chinese calligraphy

A returning artist Ela Zapf, also from Germany, shows a selection of recent pastels which range from abstract to the more realistic. Pastels have been particularly dominant in Ela's latest work, often layered on acrylics, stamps, monotype and self made collage paper. She loves to create playful compositions by following her intuition during the painting process.

James Anshutz will be returning with a new selection of his Breast Cancer Survivor portraits and will have a sufficient number of the Survivor Spirit books for Christmas giving. It is a book that inspires and encourages all those who are still in the process of fighting the disease with grace and courage as well as those who have survived. The books were not available for First Friday in October so James will be happy to sign them at this time. A portion of all proceeds go to the High Risk Breast Cancer Detection and Prevention Program at Kapi'olani Women's Breast Center.

Garry Palm will, again, be creating his "on the spot" painting: perhaps creating incredibly realistic flowers or possibly unveiling another Palm girl? From a blank canvas, you can watch it take shape over the evening. He will be offering his prints and other items for sale for your Christmas shopping.

Shayne Turner, in her first Courtyard experience, will be showing her "Grand Strands". Crafted individually and by hand in beautiful Temple Valley, each unique piece celebrates many of natures own creations, reflecting places and colors of our Islands.

TAG will be back with new costumes on the rack and offering their "Costumes and Coffee in the Courtyard" Dress up for your Christmas parties! In addition, First Friday is opening night for a RING OF FIRE, a drama by Nancy Moss and directed by Brad Powell. If you have made reservations, you can find it upstairs in the Second Floor RED Brick Studio.

In keeping with our Chinatown venue, Acupuncture & Herbs from China will be offering their exotic teas and lotions for sale as usual. Dinner and delicious desserts will be available at the Starpoint Café.

Fred Gayagas will be on the musician's stand sharing and entertaining as he has done so well many times in the past. Join in with familiar Christmas songs and old Hawaiian favorites!

Enter into the Chinatown Courtyard either on Smith Street through the Blue Dragon Gate or through the glass doors on Maunakea Street. This event is free and open to the public.
