For a mere four hours each month, well-known and emerging artists are showcased within the historic, red brick promenade and in the festive courtyard. The November One Night Stand features dramatic art pieces, chocolate and refreshment for body and soul.

We welcome Lena Larkin to the Courtyard for the first time. A new American citizen, she is originally from Russia. An artist-painter of energy, motion and power with the use of vibrant color, her work can also be soft and soothing when the subject matter requires it. The inspiration for her famous jazz series of paintings was a Jazz concert featuring Duke Ellington held in Moscow. Her illustrations are contained in a book on Hawaiian history, “South Point” by Fran Heath. Her work is displayed in two Russian museums as well as in private collections in a multitude of countries. Presently, all of Lena's paintings are originals as she does not yet engage in reproductive art.

Maurice Hutchinson will be returning to the Courtyard with Digital Fine Art derived from his pencil drawings and digitized sketches. Each work is a montage of colorful and textured puzzle-piece shapes arranged to let the eye explore and discover a variety of images to include animals, fish, birds, dragons and even faces--what is seen is limited only by the viewer's imagination.

Also new in November is a sweet guest from the Windward side:Ê The Cottage in Kailua is known for their fresh, made on site, FUDGE as well as for a variety of carefully selected, uncommon, delightful gift items. Since 2001, they have been "Purveyors of Old Fashioned Goodness", offering comfort and a connection with things from a simpler time.Ê

Garry Palm will, again, be creating his “on the spot” painting and offering his prints and other items for sale for early Christmas shopping. Will he have another Palm girl?

The Courtyard is doubly blessed to have a new-to-Chinatown artist, Julie Kerns Schaper, who will be bringing her very colorful paintings AND her husband, Otis. Her paintings are primarily of a Hawaiian theme and give the appearance of batik on rice paper. Additional work of hers can be seen on Printscapes.com.

Otis Schaper will be the musician of the evening. He has been dubbed “the Bob Dylan of Haleiwa” for his solo singer/songwriter performances at the Haleiwa Arts Festival in '07 and '08. Schaper also plays guitar and provides lead vocals for local rock band: The Strangers. Having joined The Strangers in 1996, he wrote or collaborated with Michael Scherr, on the songs in their recently released debut album "Meet The Strangers". Otis's influences include The Clash, Elvis Costello, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, The Girlaz and Barefoot Bob. Multitalented, Otis owns The Factory, a North Shore surfboard manufacturing company, and shapes Chronic Surfboards.Ê

In keeping with our Chinatown venue, Acupuncture & Herbs from China will be offering their exotic teas and lotions for sale as usual. Dinner and awesome desserts will be available at the Starpoint Café.

Note: TAG will NOT be offering their “Costumes and Coffee in the Courtyard” in November, but they will be back with new costumes on the rack in December. Dress up for your Christmas parties! You are always welcome to come by and chat about their new Season in the Second Floor RED Brick Studio.

Enter into the Chinatown Courtyard either on Smith Street through the Blue Dragon Gate or through the glass doors on Maunakea Street. This event is free and open to the public.
