| Description/Comments |
LITTLE MOMENTS BIG MAGIC: CREATING FRIENDSHIPS THROUGH ART
Over the last three years the Art To Go Program and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu (BBBSH) have had an exciting partnership fostering special relationships between "Littles" (children) and "Bigs" (mentors) by creating art together at various school sites around Oahu. An art exhibition showcasing their friendships and art work will be held on June 1 at the Cathedral Gallery from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Through the partnership between Art To Go and BBBSH, high school students volunteer to become mentors to elementary school students and are taught art techniques from instructors provided by the Honolulu Academy of Arts. This fantastic collaboration has inspired many creative children through out Oahu. This spring will present the opportunity to exhibit some of the many exciting projects that the Bigs and Littles have created together over the last several months. Pieces created by Bigs and Littles at Holomua Elementary, Ilima Intermediate, Kaimiloa Elementary, Kaiulani Elementary, Kalakaua Middle School, Nanakuli High and Middle School, Nanaikapono Elementary, Makalapa Elementary, Palolo Elementary, Puohala Elementary and Pope Elementary will be showcased at the Cathedral Gallery.
Beautiful paintings, ceramic sculptures and mixed media art will be on display and open to the public for the month of June, with a special opening reception during the First Friday event on June 1.
"We would like to thank the Cathedral Gallery for giving us the opportunity to recognize and spotlight many of the budding artists and special friendships created through the Art To Go Program and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu," said Vince Hazen, Art to Go program coordinator. "Special thanks go to the Kono Foundation, Kamehameha Schools Mentoring Program, Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL), State Foundation for Culture and the Arts and Sidney Stern Foundation for their generous support and funding."
