Description/Comments
Nu'uanu Gallery at Marks Garage presents:
The Fashion of Weight: Special Art Exhibition Hosted by Nu'uanu Gallery at Marks Garage

Featuring the Works by the Winners of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce's (HJCC) 28th Annual "Commitment to Excellence" Art Exhibition (2006)

Nu'uanu Gallery at Marks Garage will be exhibiting the works of four local artists at its June exhibition entitled The Fashion of Weight. The works of artists Alan Konishi, Mat Kubo, Lynda Hess, and Tracy Gunn, winners of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce's (HJCC) 28th Annual "Commitment to Excellence" Art Exhibition held in August 2006, will be featured. The show will showcase about 20 pieces of 2 and 3 - dimensional works.

The Fashion of Weight will open on "First Friday," June 1st, and run through Friday, June 29, 2007. The Nu'uanu Gallery at Marks Garage, located at 1161 Nu'uanu Avenue, is one of Chinatown's newest galleries. The opportunity offered by Nu'uanu Gallery at Marks Garage, will give a professional boost to the careers of these rising artists.

The theme of the exhibition, "The Fashion of Weight," pulls together a commonality that the artists share in their works. Although unique and with distinctive styles, "weight" in the literal and metaphorical sense, is the subject matter that is interwoven in the pieces that will be on display.

Alan Konishi's work is influenced by the fascination with popular culture, specifically commercial rap music and its trends. "My intention is to explore this infatuation by re-contextualizing the subject matter that is perpetuated by this obsession," says Konishi. Alan was the first-place winner of the 2-dimensional category in the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce's "Commitment to Excellence" Art Exhibition.

Mat Kubo has created a series of items cast in bronze and chained to steel shackles. Each piece will feature religious or sentimental icons that will inspire spectators to wonder, "What is the weight of sentimentality?" Kubo placed first in the 3-dimensional category in the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce's "Commitment to Excellence" Art Exhibition.

Lynda Hess finds inspiration through personal experiences; her three pieces reflect not only herself, but also "The shift in societal, spiritual, and political ideas around conception and the allopathic manipulation of female bodies," describes Hess, 2nd place winner in the 2-dimensional category.

Tracy Gunn's mosaic sculptures have garnered attention by the art community, and her figurative and abstract pieces can be found in local and mainland collections. Her 2nd place 3-dimensional work entitled Help Wanted, was influenced by her perception of the nation and the current administration.

Gallery hours are Tuesday -- Friday, 11:00 a.m. -- 6:00 p.m., and Saturday, 11:00 a.m. -- 3:00 p.m. The opening reception will be held on June 1, "First Friday," between 5:00 -- 9:00 p.m. An "Artist Talk" will be held on June 21 beginning at 6:00 p.m., and it will provide an opportunity to learn more about the artists and their inspirations.

Nu'uanu Gallery opened in December of 2006, and is a boutique gallery of 500 square feet. The Gallery features rotating exhibitions of contemporary fine art by local and mainland artists. For more information on Nu'uanu Gallery, call (808) 536-9828.
