ART GALLERY OPENING:
Featured Artist: Dhyana Zagri. Dhyana's current series of originals are based on Tibetan Thangka Art. Each work represents her interpretation of a specific Tibetan Buddhist deity, each one with its own meaning and purpose, based on this rich, ancient, cultural tradition. When asked about this body of work Dhyana said
"I first encountered this culture at the Tibetan Freedom Festival held in Washington D.C. in June of 1998. I was fascinated by the beautifully intricate designs of a sand mandala being created by the monks and the fact that they would destroy it upon completion. This was done to represent the impermanence of all things. I love this art because it represents the profound wisdom of the Tibetan culture, encouraging us to live our lives with compassion for all sentient beings, and to be aware of the impermanence of this world."
Dhyana is also featured monthly, as an on stage artist at Kealoha's First Thursday Poetry Slam. She has created hand painted images for designers Anna Lucas and Sachi Design. More recently she has introduced her own line of hand painted trucker style hats with themes that include traditional Japanese and western tattoo designs as well as some carefully selected Tibetan images. http://wayofthewindhorse.com
Brenda Garrett is a ceramic artist with over 30 years of high and low fire experience, "I choose clay as my media because it offers texture and dimension that is lacking in painting. I hope to inspire the viewer to want to reach out and touch the surface of my work." Brenda bridges old world craftsmanship with modern technology by employing graphic arts computer programs for design development. Moving to Hawaii has caused water, marine life, Asian and Polynesian themes to be a major part of her ceramic compositions.
