FALL DANCE SHOWCASE FOR LIVE FROM THE LAWN -- FREE SHOW
AT HAWAI'I STATE ART MUSEUM ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD
Please join us for Fall Dance Showcase, a free event presented as part of the Live from the Lawn performance series for First Friday. This month's event will feature modern fusion dance from Willow Chang, Arabic belly dancing from Sangha Dance Theatre, and contemporary dance from Kiwi Bird Dance Project. They will be performing on the front lawn of the Hawai'i State Art Museum (HiSAM) on Friday, November 3rd at 5-9 p.m. We also invite you to see the museum galleries, which are open during this event.
Willow Chang is one of Honolulu's finest dancers and dance instructors. She's done everything from dance hula to design costumes to sing at weddings. Now her focus is on Middle Eastern dance forms, particularly belly dancing. She danced as Medusa in Ourobouros -- a modern fusion piece about the human side of the mythical monster, fresh from premiering the piece at the 20th World Congress on Dance in Athens, Greece. At the Hawai'i State Art Museum, she will dance as Medusa and also as Athena. In addition, she will lead her dance group Sangha Dance Theatre in a celebration of Arabic belly dancing and femininity.
The Kiwi Bird Dance Project is a 30-minute contemporary dance production inspired by the Maori myth How the Kiwi Bird Lost its Wings. Enter a magical forest where silhouetted trees and brightly plumed birds dance with guardian spirits. When a plague of insects descends upon the trees' roots, the guardian spirits ask the birds, "Who among you will come down to live on the forest floor so the trees, and your home, can be saved?" The group features Jaime Nakama, Gabrielle Angeles, Michele Painter, Heather Seaton, Marguerite Simpson, and Stephanie Chang. The dance choreography is by Erzsi Palko.
Live from the Lawn is a series of innovative arts-oriented entertainment programming held on the first Friday of each month, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The shows are free to the public. The events are presented by the Friends of the Hawai'i State Art Museum, supported by the Hawai'i State Foundation for Culture and the Arts, the LEF Foundation, and the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. Starbucks Coffee and the Honolulu Advertiser are support sponsors at all events. Tim Bostock Productions is the producer of these programs.
Bring a blanket or a low back chair and relax for First Friday at the Hawai'i State Art Museum. It's a beautiful building and a wonderful lawn -- and it's your museum -- so join us as we celebrate the arts. The Hawai'i State Art Museum galleries are open, and free, all evening. This is also a wonderful opportunity for you to see the Art in Public Places and Enriched by Diversity exhibitions, showcasing excellence in Hawai'i's arts.
The Hawai'i State Art Museum is located in the former Armed Forces YMCA at 250 South Hotel Street. The gracious 1928 Spanish mission style building is situated in the historic Hawai'i Capital Cultural District, across from 'Iolani Palace and the State Capitol. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For more information on the Hawai'i State Art Museum call (808) 586-0900 or visit http://www.hawaii.gov/sfca.
